Hard labor

From a class-action lawsuit filed in December against Cook County, Illinois, and its sheriff by Catherine Zaborowski and Simone Jackson, two women previously held in Cook County Jail in Chicago.

Plaintiff Zaborowski entered the Cook County Jail on June 3, 2008. She was pregnant and was transferred to an off-site residential treatment program. She went into labor on August 29 and was taken to Stroger Hospital. Upon her arrival, deputy sheriffs shackled her hand and foot to a hospital bed. She remained shackled for about eleven hours while she was in labor. Immediately before the birth, the attending physician requested that a deputy sheriff unshackle Zaborowski’s foot. The deputy complied, and Zaborowski was shackled to the bed by one arm when she delivered her child on August 30. The deputy sheriff reshackled her foot about an hour after the birth. Zaborowski remained at Stroger Hospital until the next evening.
