Akhmatova—For the Memory of a Friend

Franz von Stuck, Der Wächter des Paradieses (1889)

On Victory Day, serene and misty,

When sunset, as if blazing, is all red,

The spring belated has been busy

Like a widow at a nameless grave.

She kneels and is in no hurry to be off,

Would puff on a bud and brush the green lawn,

And take a butterfly from shoulder down,

And fluff up a nascent dandelion.

Anna Akhmatova, Памяти Друга (1945)(Marina Korsakova-Kreyn transl.)(Victory Day, the День Победы of this piece, falls on May 9. This commemorates the conclusion of the Second World War.)
