From a Spanish-English dictionary, designed to facilitate conversations between street cops and civilians, written by Dr. Roger W. Miller, who trains law-enforcement personnel in Arizona. Entries were selected based on “personal knowledge; words students had heard out on the street; Mexican newspapers and magazines; words from the songs of musica nortena [Mexican gangster rap] that describe encounters with the police; ride-alongs; and local Spanish-speaking radio and TV stations.” The dictionary gives sample sentences in both English and Spanish; English examples are listed below.
Abduct—raptar. My children were abducted by an unknown person.
Abuse—abuso. You are under arrest for sexual abuse.
Angry, to get—enojarse de. I got angry with my mother-in-law, and for that reason I hit her with a baseball bat.
Because—porque. I did it because she was going out with another man.
Bedroom—recámara. There are weapons hidden in the bedroom.
Body—cuerpo. Which part of the body did he hit with the tire iron?
Bottle—botella. How many bottles of beer did you drink?
But—pero. I want to drink less, but I can't.
Carpet—alfombra. Where do these bloodstains on the carpet come from?
Chain—cadena. The holdup man was wearing four gold chains on his neck.
Cheer up—animarse. Cheer up, you will probably get probation.
Cook—cocinar. I was cooking when I heard the shots.
Do—hacer. Do me the favor of shutting up.
Drug addict—drogadicto. Are you a drug addict?
Drunk—pisto. My great-grandfather is drunk.
Drunk, to get—emborracharse. I got drunk, and when I arrived home I beat up my old lady.
Fact—hecho. The fact is that you hit your husband with the rock.
Frying pan—sartén. It's true, my wife hit me on the head with a large frying pan.
Get—conseguir, obtener. It is important for you to get a driver's license as soon as possible.
How much?—¿Cuánto? How much does the phony work card cost?
Insult—insultar. She insulted me, and for that reason I hit her.
Jealous—celoso. She shot him because she was jealous.
Mattress—colchón. We found a semiautomatic and money under the mattress in your bedroom.
Necessary—necesario. It is necessary for you to get plates for your pickup.
Realize—darse cuenta de. Did you realize that we found twenty plastic bags of white powder in the closet?
Rib—costilla. That drunk hit me in the ribs.
Run down, run over—atropellar. The gang member's car ran me over five minutes ago.
Scissors—tijeras. My sister attacked me with some scissors.
Screwdriver—destornillador. My boyfriend jabbed me in the chest with a screwdriver.
Stab—apuñalar. How many times did your sweetheart stab you?
Stain—mancha. Why do you have bloodstains on your hands and your clothes?
Television set—televisor. My brother-in-law stole my television set.
Throw—echar. I stopped you because you threw a woman out of your car.
Tie up—amarrar. My boyfriend tied me up to the bed, and he left me like that for more than four hours.
Tires—llantas. The gangbanger's car has wide tires.
Unbutton—desbrochar. The man that robbed the bank had his shirt unbuttoned to the waist.
Whore—puta. Who is the pimp of this whore?
